Her father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) where she graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. The model appeared in commercials for some time prior to moving to Los Angeles. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models in Montgomery Ward. She made her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring part on the ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on different shows and appearing in independent films as well as produced for television, she also appeared as a star of several TV shows. Donna Abandando was her first large role on ABC's crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the team from 1993 until 1996. Her nomination was for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actor in a drama each year.
