Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try she applied for and was awarded a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her set in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
